TO RUN INSTEAD OF WALKING
During my work and sport career, I have seen many athletes around gyms, sport arenas and beaches; I learnt new things by anyone and I improved many others.
The rare dedication of Laura Cavalluzzi, the perfect planning of Valeria Rosso, the unlimited strength of Vladimir Tchernichov, the ‘uniqueness’ of Giorgio Domenghini* have made me understand what makes special a good player in comparison with simply a good player; the synthesis is: you must run.
To run, not only in real terms in the pitch (which anyone does at the beginning of the match) but mentally.
In order to play to this game with the ball and the net you must be attentive, rapid to take decisions, and never stand too much: never on the past side out, never on the lost point, not even when the referee is wrong or our partner is not at top….to run and that’s it!!!
Who runs even during a difficult match or even when losing is on the right way: the stop and shout against the opponent or against the public distract from our run…
In any training session with professionals or ‘real players’** I always hope to manage to transmit the concept of running, to be attentive to what happens, to be able to manage the point, the set, the match or the whole season. The ‘don’t give up
‘ which many shout, in my opinion, does not mean to be attached to the match; this has been demonstrated to me by one of the strongest athlete I have never trained who showed me how you can win a match giving up to a set in which you are behind leaving the game to the opponent who does not realize we allow this to him.
To run in work out, in the match, in activation***… makes us prepared and aware that we will do our best to win… and if the opponent would do even better, we would know even better that at the next work out we have to fly…
*(you will shortly read an article on him, trying to explain the phenomenon ‘Domenighini’ as beach volley athlete)
**( “real players”…not amateurs: they train same and more then many professional, but are not so lucky to do it as a job)
***( Activation: how, when and why).
